UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

What does “blown”
double glazing mean?

A double-glazed unit has two panes of glass joined around the edges, with a sealed space between them. “Blown” or “misted” glass usually describes a unit whose edge seal has failed, allowing moisture into that space.

As temperatures change, this moisture can condense on the surfaces inside the unit. You may see a haze, droplets or marks that you cannot wipe away from either accessible side. The misting can come and go with the weather, even though the seal has failed.

Is it between the panes or on the surface?

Condensation on the room-facing surface can be related to indoor humidity and ventilation. Condensation on the outside surface can also occur without a failed seal. Neither automatically means the glass needs replacing. If the moisture is between the panes, ask us to assess the unit.

Not sure which it is? Email a photo of your window and tell us where you can see the moisture.

REPLACE THE UNIT, KEEP A SUITABLE FRAME

You may not need
a whole new
window.

In many cases, the failed glass unit can be replaced within the existing frame.

The sealed unit is the glass assembly, not the complete window. We assess the frame and glazing arrangement before recommending a replacement, then measure the unit and check the specification needed.

If the frame is damaged or unsuitable, replacing the glass alone may not be the right answer. We also offer replacement windows and can discuss the options with you.

WHY REPLACE A FAILED UNIT?

Clear glass.
A practical improvement.

See clearly again

Replace the haze or moisture trapped within the failed unit with clear glass and an unobstructed view.

Keep what still works

When the existing frame is suitable, replacing the glass avoids removing a complete window unnecessarily.

Restore a sealed unit

A new unit restores the sealed glass assembly. Its thermal performance depends on the glass specification and the condition of the rest of the window.

FROM FIRST ENQUIRY TO FITTING

How replacement works

01 / GET IN TOUCH

Tell us what you’re seeing

Call or email with your postcode, a photograph and the number of affected units. Photos help with the initial enquiry but do not replace an accurate measurement.

02 / ASSESS & MEASURE

Check the window

We assess whether the existing frame is suitable, measure the unit and check the glass requirements before confirming the work.

03 / ORDER THE GLASS

Make the replacement to size

Once the specification and quote are agreed, the replacement sealed unit is ordered for manufacture. We discuss the expected lead time for your order.

04 / FIT THE UNIT

Replace the failed glass

We arrange fitting, remove the failed unit and install the new sealed unit in the existing frame, checking the fit on completion.

FAQs

Want to discuss your window?

Does the whole window need replacing?

Often, no. If the frame and glazing arrangement are suitable, we can replace the sealed glass unit without replacing the whole window. We need to assess the condition first; a damaged frame may need a different solution.

Can misted glass be repaired instead of replaced?

Cleaning the accessible surfaces cannot remove moisture trapped between the panes. Our service replaces the failed sealed unit rather than drilling or defogging it. This replaces the glass assembly and its edge seal while retaining a suitable frame.

How long does replacement take?

There are two parts: the lead time to make the glass and the fitting appointment. Both depend on the specification, number of units and access. We can discuss an expected lead time once the requirements are checked and arrange fitting when the glass is ready.

Can different types of glass be replaced?

Sealed units can have different thicknesses and specifications, including clear, obscure, toughened or coated glass. Tell us about any pattern, tint or other feature you want to retain. We check suitability and availability before confirming the replacement; not every specification can be assumed to match.

Will replacing the glass stop all window condensation?

A new sealed unit addresses moisture between the panes of that failed unit. It does not automatically stop condensation on the room-facing or outside surface, which can have other causes. Tell us where the condensation appears so we can discuss the right next step.

How much does a replacement sealed unit cost?

The size, glass specification, number of units and access all affect the quote. Contact us for a free quote rather than relying on a price for a different window. A photograph and your postcode are useful starting points; measurements and specification still need to be checked.

What should I send when I enquire?

Send a photograph of the affected window, your postcode, how many units are misted and a contact number. Take photos from a safe position without removing glass or leaning out of a window. If using the form below, attach photographs in your email app after preparing the enquiry.
